Also at the event, Shawcity will be showcasing City Technology’s latest seven-year-life oxygen sensors and five-year-life carbon monoxide sensors. The company will also be introducing their new hydrogen sulphide sensor with a 15-month operating life, ideal for use in landfill and biogas.

Engineering workshops
A dedicated Engineering Workshop will give trainees and apprentices the opportunity to get hands-on with the latest technology, learn from the experts and experience practical demonstrations from companies.
Jason Edwards, Trescal, will be hosting the ‘Laser Tracker and Portable CMM Arm’ workshop. Trescal’s engineers can provide the expertise and support for data acquisition of large products including assemblies, fixtures, products and test fixtures. Capturing precise measurements, utilising portable and non-contact metrology equipment and demonstrating metrological traceability to national standards. Attendees to this workshop can learn a little about: turn-key metrology engineering; non-contact measurement; metrological traceability; reverse engineering; jig assembly and recertification; and general inspection.
Ian Seaton and Stuart Randall, Third Dimension, will host workshops on ‘Non-contact Laser Measurement in Modern Metrology’. Metrology, once seen as a wasteful extravagance is now becoming seen as integral to increasing quality, decreasing production time and reducing costs. Modern production is always demanding faster, easier to use methods of measuring, traditional contact methods are time consuming and prone to operator bias. Looking at specific applications from automobile manufacture and aerostructure construction to wind turbine fabrication, the workshop will explore the advantages of this handheld laser measurement technology. And, looking beyond handheld applications, describe how the same handheld applications can be migrated to robot-based solutions doing away with the operator bias entirely.
Seminars
The action-packed CPD accredited seminar programme returns to the exhibition. Speakers will share their expertise and knowledge with a focused and highly engaged audience regarding pressing matters within the industry.
Alison Mitchell, Sensor City, will present ‘The development of sensor technology’. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the buzzword of the 21st century. Offering masses of opportunity to SMEs and enterprises alike, innovative businesses need to embrace IoT to reap the benefits and reduce the risk of getting left behind.
From smart devices and 3D printing to AI and machine learning, the manufacturing industry has been transformed as we become increasingly engrossed in the digital world, or the ‘fourth industrial revolution.’ One big problem for emerging SMEs however, is the lack of skills, technology, and high-end facilities needed to develop their innovative concepts into viable, market-ready solutions. Alison will address this in her seminar.
Myriad Group’s Neil Hamilton returns to the event this year to provide real world insight into what is driving companies to connect their products to IoT platforms and to share his experience of how companies are doing this the smart way based on the mistakes learned by the early pioneers.
Andrew Peaty, the Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA), will give an overview of the Defence and Security Accelerator, including how people from industry and academia can get involved.
Dr Jiri Polak, of Innovative Sensor Technology (IST AG), will discuss ESA space sensors. IST AG is the only approved supplier of ESA-qualified thin film platinum temperature sensors for space applications. These sensors, also known as HIREL sensors, were subjected to very harsh and demanding tests to guarantee 100 per cent operation. Dr Polak will explain how, over the past three years, IST AG has invested a lot of resources and know-how in the development of these sensors and into testing to achieve ESA qualification.
